Brewster soil, Cape Cod Bay proximity and the freeze-thaw cycle that arrives every winter put masonry work here under real stress. Surface damage is usually a symptom of something that went wrong below grade with the base, the compaction and the drainage.
Bluestone and paver patios, cobble borders, pool surrounds and outdoor living areas set over a properly excavated and compacted base built for Brewster conditions. Explore our patio installation services
Fieldstone, segmental block and boulder walls, granite steps and entries designed for Cape Cod drainage and soil movement. View retaining walls
Bluestone and paver walkways, stone entry work and exterior masonry for Brewster properties, including homes along Route 6A and around the kettle ponds. Explore entry work
We build for year ten, not just for day one.
Both photographs are the same back yard on the same Brewster property. The work included a bluestone patio with a cut stone border, a walkway down the side of the house, granite steps, and planting beds set in white stone.
One crew for the hard surfaces and the green around them, so the patio, the planting beds and the upkeep are not three different companies blaming each other.

Seat walls, garden walls and structural walls, with the drainage and reinforcement the height calls for.
Retaining Walls
Settlement, open joints and cracked work repointed, reset or rebuilt after we see what the base is doing.
Masonry Repair
Paver and bluestone patios, pool surrounds and driveways over a compacted base that drains.
Patios & Paving
Natural and manufactured veneer on foundations, chimneys, columns and outdoor kitchens.
Stone Veneer
Granite and bluestone steps, landings and entries set on footings that hold through frost heave.
Steps & Stone Entries
Brick and block structures, piers, steps and foundations, laid and pointed for freeze and thaw.
Brick & Block Work
Planting beds, grading, edging and stone work planned together rather than bolted on afterwards.
Landscaping

Leaf and debris clearing, beds cut back to a clean edge, haul-away the same day.
Spring & Fall Cleanups
Site assessment, layout, drainage routing and material selection settled on paper before anything is dug.

These are typical installed ranges for Brewster and the surrounding Cape Cod towns in 2026. Where a project lands inside a range depends on the conditions we find on site, which is why every number below is followed by the things that actually move it.
| Work | Typical range in Brewster (2026) | What moves the price |
|---|---|---|
| Paver patio | $15 to $35 per sq ft | Patio size, paver line, base depth over sandy Cape soil, and access for machinery. |
| Walkway and stone entry | $12 to $28 per sq ft | Length, material, number of curves and steps, and how much grading the run needs. |
| Retaining wall | $15 to $50 per sq ft | Wall height, whether geogrid reinforcement is required, drainage, and excavation depth. |
| Outdoor steps | $150 to $900 per step | Poured concrete at the low end, natural granite at the high end, plus railing and landing work. |
| Natural stone work | $15 to $45 per sq ft | Stone type, cut versus fieldstone, mortared versus dry-laid, and pattern complexity. |
| Concrete masonry | $9 to $18 per sq ft | Slab thickness, reinforcement, finish, and whether existing material has to come out first. |
Ranges are a starting point for planning, not a quote. We price the actual project after walking the property.
Permit requirements in Brewster depend on the scope of the work, the location of your property and whether it sits inside a protected area. Wetlands near Cape Cod Bay and the kettle ponds, plus the Old King's Highway Historic District along Route 6A, can both affect the planning process before a single stone is set.
The Town of Brewster handles building permits for construction, alteration and repair work covered by the Massachusetts State Building Code. Masonry work that involves a structure can fall under those requirements, and we check that question before the project is scheduled.
Work within 100 feet of a wetland resource area falls in the buffer zone under the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act and is filed with the local Conservation Commission. Brewster has Cape Cod Bay on the north and a long list of kettle ponds inland, so a surprising number of back yards sit inside that distance. The Town of Brewster is the authority on what your specific lot requires.
Brewster is one of the towns in the Old King's Highway Regional Historic District along Route 6A. Exterior work that is visible from a public way in the district goes before the town's historic district committee for a certificate of appropriateness before it starts. We walk the property with you first and tell you plainly whether your project is inside the district, because that answer changes the schedule before it changes the design.
We check the distance to wetlands and the district boundary before we price the job, not after it is already on the schedule.
Properties inside the Old King's Highway Regional Historic District, which runs along Route 6A through the northern part of Brewster, require review by the town's historic district committee before exterior work visible from a public way may begin.
The district follows Route 6A north of Route 6 through Brewster. If your property sits within that corridor and the work you want, such as a patio edge, a walkway, a retaining wall or a set of stone steps, is visible from the road, a certificate of appropriateness is required before construction starts. We walk the property with you first and tell you plainly whether your scope falls inside the district and in view of the way, because that answer changes the schedule before it changes the design.

If you are unsure whether the historic district or a wetland setback applies to your property, we address that during the estimate walk before you have committed to the project.
From bluestone patios to granite steps and retaining walls, our customers value careful workmanship, honest communication and a crew that treats every property as if it were their own.

Brewster is one of the six towns in the Old King's Highway Regional Historic District, which covers the part of town north of Route 6 along Route 6A. Exterior work in the district that is visible from a public way goes before the town's historic district committee for a certificate of appropriateness before it starts. That covers the materials and the look of a wall, a patio edge, a walkway or a set of steps facing the road. We walk the property with you first and tell you plainly whether what you want is inside the district and visible from the way, because that answer changes the schedule before it changes the design.

Water gets into the base, freezes, expands, and lifts whatever sits on top of it. Do that through a Cape winter and a patio that looked level in October comes out of March with rocked stones, open joints and a low corner that holds a puddle. The cause is almost never the stone. It is a base that was too thin, never compacted in layers, or built on soil that holds water with nowhere to drain. We excavate to a depth the soil on your lot actually calls for, compact in lifts, and set the stone on a bed that drains, which is the part nobody sees and the only part that decides whether it is still flat in ten years.
A full backyard rebuild runs a couple of weeks of working days for most properties. On a recent Brewster job the yard was bare graded soil with the base being set on July 15 and the finished bluestone patio, walkway, granite steps and planting beds were photographed on July 27. Weather, the size of the area and whether the job needs a town filing are what move that number. We give you the realistic range at the site visit instead of the best case.
All work we complete carries a 3 years warranty. That coverage reflects the durability standard we hold ourselves to on every patio, wall, walkway and stone entry we build. Contact us for the full terms as they apply to your project.
We are based in South Yarmouth, about 8 miles from Brewster, which means crews reach your property early and materials arrive fresh. Most Brewster jobs are a short drive from the yard, and we are not billing travel time before the first stone is set.
